Galway City Council have prepared for the regular Irish winter storms by installing one of our Beaver flood barriers along the River Corrib at the Spanish Arch. The 120m long S130 barrier has been protecting the 16th century brickwork of the arch and the buildings behind it from flood waters since it’s installation in October 2019. In the past 5 months it has withstood both Storm Lorenzo and Storm Brendan without requiring maintenance.
The Beaver flood barrier is an excellent choice for this location as it’s easy to install and remove, and won’t damage the landscape it’s placed upon. It can be left up during autumn and winter each year to combat storms and then removed and stored during the warmer months.
The Beaver flood barrier moulds to its landscape, and the weight of the water filling the barrier will hold it in place without requiring any additional equipment or supports. The flexibility of the barrier also means it can bend to fit around the benches and stairs, and the tough exterior is resistant to punctures.
